What is CBG?
CBG, or cannabigerol, is the base molecule of cannabinoids.
At present, CBG has been little studied in terms of its effects on health, and research on it remains scarce.
However, this molecule has long been known in the cannabis world because it is the first to form in hemp, even before THC or CBD.
In hemp, CBGA is the first to form (in its acid form). It then multiplies to give rise to CBDA and THCA, the other so-called acid molecules of CBD and THC.
At the end of the hemp plant's flowering stage, thanks to light and heat, a process known as decarboxylation takes place: the acid forms of these molecules then convert into CBG, CBD and THC, and their levels gradually increase.
How does CBG act on the body?
First of all, let us remember that our body contains the ECS (endocannabinoid system), which has receptors found in various places (brain, intestines, lungs, etc.). All these receptors allow it to act on different levels.
Unlike CBD, which activates the CB2 receptors within our ECS, CBG activates the CB1 receptors.
CB1 receptors activate the areas involved in emotions and memory processing. CB2 receptors are mainly linked to the immune system.
There may be a link between pain management and CBG. Indeed, the vanilloid receptor 1 plays an important role in pain signalling and the processing of inflammation, and CBG acts directly on this receptor.
It is also worth noting that, following a study carried out on rats in 2016, the animals had a greater appetite thanks to CBG; this now remains to be demonstrated through new studies in humans.
The different properties of CBG
Some studies suggest that CBG may even be the original stem cell of cannabidiol and THC, since it is the first to form, as mentioned above.
CBG, like CBD, has no psychoactive effect, but it represents a very promising hope in the medical field, as it is thought to have the following effects:
- Antibacterial
- Antifungal
- Improving sleep quality
- Reducing pain
- Slowing the proliferation of certain cancers, particularly prostate cancer
- Reducing the risk of blood clotting
