CBD for dogs and cats, a good idea?

What is CBD?
CBD is a cannabinoid called cannabidiol. It's a molecule found in the cannabis plant that has many virtues. For example, scientists highlight its anti-inflammatory properties, which can help people suffering from chronic illnesses such as fibromyalgia or multiple sclerosis.
Unlike THC, the well-known psychoactive molecule in cannabis, CBD has no psychoactive or addictive effects. On the contrary, it can even help to detach oneself from addictions.
This is why CBD is not considered a drug. Even if scientists from developed countries such as Canada, Israel and the USA agree that CBD is a product of the future from a medical point of view, and that it has many therapeutic virtues, CBD is not considered a drug today.
CBD for dogs and cats: what the science says
We're attached to our pets, and this special relationship we have with them sometimes leads us to suffer almost as much as they do when they're ill and in pain, anxious, or ageing and suffering from osteoarthritis pain, for example. Because yes, as with us, science has made enormous progress over the last few decades, and the result is that our pets are living longer. The other side of the coin is that our pets are more likely to suffer from pathologies linked to their advanced age: osteoarthritis, anxiety, neurological pathologies, and so on.
In June 2019, the results of a clinical trial of CBD (administered orally as CBD oil) at the University of Colorado Veterinary Teaching Hospital were published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association. The trial involved epileptic dogs. A reduction in seizures was observed, and no adverse effects on behavior were reported by owners.
In May 2021, the results of a second study were published in the same journal, again on epileptic dogs. These studies will continue, as they are all showing promising results. Several other studies have demonstrated the efficacy of CBD when given repeatedly orally for 1-3 months to dogs suffering from osteoarthritis pain.
In fact, CBD has been shown to reduce the production of pro-inflammatory proteins and increase the production of anti-inflammatory proteins. In dogs suffering from osteoarthritis, taking CBD reduces pain and improves mobility.
Improvements in skin problems, appetite and anxiety have also been reported.
Precautions before using CBD for your dog or cat
Some side effects have been noted, such as a sensation of thirst due to reduced salivation, or drowsiness, as CBD has a calming effect. That's why we advise you to consult your vet first, and to start with a minimum dosage of CBD, then gradually increase until you achieve the desired results.
